4. Child safety policy

4.1 Our commitment. The safety and wellbeing of every child in our programs comes first. We’re committed to providing a safe, inclusive and respectful environment where children are heard and their concerns are taken seriously. We apply Queensland’s Child Safe Standards and the Universal Principle for the cultural safety of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children (Child Safe Organisations Act 2024 (Qld)). We also meet Blue Card requirements under the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000 (Qld).

4.2 Where this policy applies. It covers all our activities, including:

  • school, kindergarten and OSHC incursions

  • holiday programs and workshops

  • after-school and weekend clubs

  • tutoring

  • parties

  • community events

  • online classes

4.3 How we keep children safe:

  • Screening: every adult who works or volunteers with us holds a current Queensland Blue Card. No one starts work without one, and we keep a register of card numbers and expiry dates.

  • Code of conduct: our staff act professionally and respectfully at all times, and always put children’s safety first.

  • Training: staff are trained in child protection, recognising signs of harm, and responding to and reporting concerns.

  • Supervision:

    • Staff-to-child ratios follow Queensland best-practice guidelines.

    • Activities run in open spaces with clear lines of sight.

    • No adult is ever alone with a child out of view of others.

  • Online safety: online classes run on supervised platforms. Staff don’t contact children privately through personal accounts or messaging apps.

  • Inclusion: we welcome children of all backgrounds and abilities, and we make reasonable adjustments for diverse needs.

  • Risk assessments: we carry out a documented risk assessment for every program, covering supervision, materials, environment and individual needs.

4.4 Parents and visitors at sessions. To protect all children, parents and guardians don’t usually stay in sessions, even if they hold a Blue Card. Our Child Safety Officer may approve an exception for a child’s specific needs. Anyone given access must follow our supervision and conduct rules and must not use a mobile phone in the session.

4.5 Photography and media:

  • We never take or publish photos or videos that show children’s faces.

  • Images we use only show hands, projects and activities.

  • We ask for written consent from a parent or guardian before using any image, even when no face is visible.

4.6 Raising a concern. Anyone, including children, parents, teachers and staff, can raise a concern about a child’s safety or the behaviour of someone working with us. Contact our Child Safety Officer:

We’ll treat every concern seriously and confidentially, act promptly, and report to the relevant authorities as the law requires. If a child is in immediate danger, call 000.

4.7 Breaches of this policy. We investigate allegations and breaches promptly. A breach may result in disciplinary action, ending a person’s work with us, and reporting to the authorities.

4.8 Review. We review this policy at least once a year, and whenever the law changes.

5. Experiments and activities disclaimer

Experiment ideas and activities on our website, in our blog and in our online courses are shared as a resource for teachers, parents and students.

  • An adult should supervise children at all times when trying them at home or in class.

  • Some activities include small parts and aren’t suitable for children under 5.

  • Please check materials for allergies before starting.

To the extent the law allows, we aren’t responsible for injury or damage arising from activities done without our staff present.
